Engineering utility line & network surveying

Mapping overhead and underground utility networks by as-built or topographic method, with buried lines located using dedicated detection equipment.

What this is

There are two methods. An as-built survey is done while the trench is still open, before the line is covered and backfilled. A topographic survey maps what is visible above ground and locates what is buried using detection equipment. The first is far more reliable — but it is only available for a short window, and once the trench is closed that opportunity is gone for the life of the asset.

What you end up with

A drawing recording the position, depth, diameter, material and purpose of every line — so that the next person to dig on that site knows what is under them before the bucket goes in.

In detail

Recorded for heating, water, fuel and gas

Line type and purpose — drinking water, industrial, fire main — support and column type, means of conveyance (gravity or pumped), the form of the laying and type of duct (walkable, half-walkable, non-walkable), and the number, material and outside diameter of pipes. Recorded, for example, as 2 steel × 150 / 1 steel × 100.

Recorded for sewerage

Network type (gravity or pumped), purpose (domestic, industrial, storm), the material and size of stormwater collectors, the internal pipe diameter on gravity networks, material names, and the internal dimensions and material of manholes. Recorded, for example, as cast iron-800.

Recorded for cable and power

Cable voltage, outside diameter, grade, the number of cables in a duct block, and the material, number and dimensions of substation and switching buildings. For overhead lines: voltage, conductor count, and the dimensions, material and height of supports.

Recorded for telecommunications

Cable type (copper or fibre), capacity, grade, cross-sectional dimensions, duct count, and the dimensions of chambers and cabinets. Every chamber cover is shown individually.

How position is fixed

  • On built-up sites — tied in from geodetic control, survey reference points and adjacent structures
  • On open ground — fixed from geodetic control and survey reference points
  • As-built survey of buried networks is carried out at 1:500 while the trench remains open
